The Oilers, based in Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, had their team name inspired by Alberta’s vast oil reserves. A group of talented players were introduced to the NHL® when the Oilers joined the league in 1979. After winning multiple Stanley Cup® Championships during the 1980s, the Oilers were honored with "dynasty" status by the Hockey Hall of Fame. In the 1983-84 season, the Oilers finished first overall in the NHL winning a franchise record of 57 games and scoring a grand total of 446 goals for an NHL record.
